I painted this one summer years ago. It was a quick, alla prima painting I made sitting on our porch while Charlie drew with crayons beside me. Oil painting on stretched canvas, 6 x 7.5"
One summer, a large, interesting looking weed grew up in our driveway. I liked the way the leaves glowed when sunlight shown on them from above. I took a photo of the plant from the ground looking toward the sky and made this painting from it. Acrylic painting on stretched canvas, 18 x 24"
I started painting this years ago and abandoned it thinking it was going nowhere. Anna spotted it and encouraged me to finish it. So I did. I gave it to her and now it is hers.. in more ways than one! Acrylic painting on stretched canvas, 24 x 36"
Had fun doing this little cartoon. Maybe I did it because I've always liked the old black and white cartoons of traffic where the cars danced along and winked at each other. Acrylic painting on stretched canvas, 14 x 11"
Here's another painting of a reader outside. I always like the idea of reading on the beach. I carry a book or two with me when I head out on the sand. They are usually neglected though as I relax and enjoy the beach. Oil painting on stretched canvas, 18 x 24"
Part of my commute everyday is over Raccoon Creek just south of Palmyra. I made this painting from a photograph I took near there with a wary eye towards passing pickup trucks and cars. Inexplicably, most of the trees, the bridge and the creek disappeared, but the lines of the highway stayed. Oil painting on stretched canvas, 36 x 24"
For this painting, I worked from a photo I took on the road to Carysbrook Plantation. I took many liberties in developing this, so it doesn't resemble the photo, but I liked the way it was going so I went with it. Oil painting on stretched canvas, 24 x 36"
The next few weeks I'll post several Landscapes I've done in the last year or two. These are a bit larger in size - 24 x 36". This one started from a local view of a green field with the Blue Ridge in the distance and somehow I made it into a desert! Oil painting on stretched canvas, 24 x 36"
I painted this for a demonstration for Wendy Custer's art class at Fluvanna High School. It was inspired by a view of the field across Route 53 from Pleasant Grove, very near the high school. Oil painting on canvas, 10 x 22"
Here's another view of the same bridge I painted for the "Bridge at Bremo" painting that I displayed a couple of weeks ago. It was interesting trying different approaches to the same subject. Oil painting on cradled panel, 6 x 6"
This pair of canvases were originally used for a couple of Landscape paintings I decided not to keep. Over time, the original paintings were completely covered as I cleaned my brushes on them after working on other paintings. I like the abstract pattern that appeared; it reminds me of a workshop. So I thought tools would look at home on them and I painted them in. Oil paintings on stretched canvas, 12 x 6"
A sketch of a logging road. When I come upon an area in the forest that has been logged, I find myself looking with interest at the stark, raw Landscape. Very interesting, but a little desolate until the trees grow in again. Oil painting on canvas board, 6 x 8"
I painted this for the annual C2D Art Exhibit at the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville. This year's theme is bridges. The Route 15 bridge at Bremo Bluff connects Fluvanna County to the north with Buckingham County to the south carrying traffic high above the James River and its adjacent lowlands. Oil painting on Masonite board, 8 x 24"
Here's a painting I did at a painting workshop on water and reflections. It was fun working fast and loose with deep, saturated colors. Oil painting on canvas panel, 11 x14"
Another green world ... or least part of it. This was painted from a different area of the same photograph that I painted "Dark Valley" a couple of weeks ago. Oil painting on cradled panel, 6 x 8"
Dark, shadowy trees in the distance. I was going to paint something very different (brighter and crisper) from the photograph I was working with. These trees in a small part of the photograph in the background caught my eye and I went with this instead. Oil painting on canvas board, 6 x 8"
